Egg Tart
The egg tart is a treat enjoyed by Hong Kongers since the 1940s. Tea restaurants (cha chaan teng) were the first to serve this confection as part of their eclectic yet affordable menu. It accompanied afternoon tea. Over time, the popularity of the custard filled crumbly crust treat made it a favorite choice for dessert after meals.
While it came from its neighbor Macau, its origin is closer to the custard tarts of Britain. However, it has long emerged from the shadow of its western counterpart and now stands on its own as the iconic pastry dish of the former British colony. The best way to enjoy an egg tart is when it is fresh out of the oven from one of the city’s local tea restaurants. |
