Times Square

A fine jewel of Causeway Bay is the Times Square Hong Kong. Locals or visiting guests come to visit the various shops and restaurants at the Causeway Bay and the Times Square Hong Kong is a must-visit when they do. The Times Square is located on top of the MTR Causeway Bay Station exit. The Times Square boasts over 230 different stores, 2 department stores, and over 20 international restaurants.

The major shopping center is currently in its 23rd year. Before the creation of the Times Square, the location itself was once occupied by the original Sharp Street tram depot of the Hong Kong Tramways. The site is also dominantly residential, with many residents complaining about the noise that the trams make. By 1991, the plans to redevelop and beautify the site were revealed. The complex was created by Wharf Properties Limited and was opened in April 1994.

The mall itself is quite a sight to see. Visitors can easily recognize the mall by its elaborate displays and the various decorations that they set up every festival or for other celebrations held. The most popular event is the countdown to a new year every 31st of December.

A unique twist of Times Square Hong Kong is in its design. Due to the expensive land price in Hong Kong, Times Square adapted and was considered to be the first “vertical mall” in Hong Kong. Times Square takes pride in its vertical design and each shop is seemingly integrated into a convenient network of elevators and escalators. An experience at Times Square Hong Kong is truly one different from its Western counterparts.

God of Desire

For shoppers who want the Hong Kong touch to their clothing line, The God of Desire is a lifestyle design and retail brand based in Hong Kong. The brand is known for its whimsical interpretation of Hong Kong design and culture in their product line. This Hong Kong-based company has gone beyond the shores of Hong Kong and has branches in London, Amsterdam, New York, Sydney, Singapore and many more.

The God of Desire was founded in Hong Kong in 1996 by entrepreneurs Douglas Young and Benjamin Lau. In Hong Kong, there are over six different stores located all throughout. It’s unique take on culture created a following and soon after the G.O.D. became an international brand.

Fun fact, the English word ‘G.O.D.’ is a homophonic translation of the Cantonese jyu hou di which translates to “to live better”. This is just a start to the many trans-cultural nods that the God of Desire has in store for their customers. The concept of the company boils down to a simple idea of eastern lifestyle as an alternative to the western way of living. The company’s core range includes fashion, home accessories, premium gifts and many more. God of Desire’s products have an inherent Hong Kong feel to them.

The following years after the 2nd world war saw an expansion in their watch business and outlets at Shanghai Street and Kowloon was soon established.
