Chesil Beach & West Bay
About Chesil BeachChesil beach is a very unique stretch of beach that runs a length of 29 kilometres between the isle of Portland and west bay.
The main reason for it being so unique is due to its fleet lagoon that stretches across a large part of the beach which makes a lovely stretch of sand in between the ocean and the lagoon. SwimmingSwimming here can be dangerous due to a strong undertow. If you do decide to swim it is strongly advised to wear a life jackets or some form of safety.
Do take care on the shoreline also as the waves can engulf people at the waters edge. ParkingPay and display parking is available at all locations along Chesil beach.

HistoryMany shipwrecks have happened here over the centuries and the bay was even named "dead man's Bay" by Thomas Hardy.
The smugglers that use to land on Chesil beach at night could tell their location from just picking up a handful of shingle. The reason they could tell from this is because the pebbles on the beach are very large from the Isle of Portland and they get smaller all the way dow to West Bay where the pebbles become sand. |
