Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands off the southeastern coast of Bali, the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. There are also many quiet and secluded white sand beaches along the north and northwest coasts of Nusa Penida – which are getting more crowded by the years since everyone wants a piece of quiet time. Other geographical tourist attractions include limestone caves, spectacular high coastal cliffs with spectacular formations and offshore wonders in the south and east, and rocky hilltops in the high centre.
This is a wild, rugged and largely untamed island which offers plenty to those with an adventurous spirit. It is highly recommended to spend more time here and see fewer sites each day – since a single day can hardly cover the vastness that the island can provide. Travel is extremely slow between each site and the road conditions are very poor but that is an expected set back since the island is not developed nor as crowded as the other parts of Bali. Nusa Penida is best known as a world-class diving destination. There are more than 20 recognized dive spots around the aisle, the most notable including Crystal Bay, Manta Point, Manta Bay, Toyapakeh, Gamat Bay, Ped and SD. The abundant waters around the three islands support no less than 247 species of coral and 562 species of fish – definitely a huge plus for all of the fans of marine life. One other noteworthy thing to remember about Nusa Penida is the fact that there it is also an important religious site to the Balinese people. There are various temples and religious sites located all around the island. One such place is called the Pura Penataran Ped which is a highly important temple for the Hindu practitioners in Bali. The Hindus go to this temple to pray, asking for protection against illness, disease and death. The temple itself was created on such a grand scale that it is comparable to other grand temples of other much more developed Hindi countries. TIPS
