Roast Dinner
A roast dinner is a traditional English meal and a staple in homes across the country. It is a must during Christmas time. However, even if you aren’t invited to an English home during your visit, most pubs in London serve it during lunch, typically on Sundays. Hence, it also known as the Sunday Roast.
As it turns out, church and bakeries back in the 19th century are to thank for this tradition. Back then, homemakers would drop off their cuts of meat at the local bakery to make use of the oven. At the time, Sunday was a rest day for most bakeries. After church, they would pick up their roasts on the way home and serve it to the family. A typical meal includes a choice of roasted meat together with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, stuffing, and vegetables. All of which are smothered in a generous serving of gravy. |

Cradled confidently on the Mayfair Mews is The Guinea Grill, a classic pub which exudes a noticeable masculine vibe - a vibe that tells you this no non-sense restaurant will serve you only the best of the grilled goodness. Inside, the heavy woodwork meets the subtle touches of elegant curtains - a combination that makes the place both welcoming and exciting.
Those who like it hot and heavy should go for the house specialty - the Prime Aberdeenshire Scotch beef that sizzles with explosive flavors that you can smell even from a distance. Folks with smaller appetites will love The Guinea Grill's handmade pork pies. Well-aged venison, lamb, veal and smoked salmon are yours for the taking. The Jolly Butcher |
There's beyond this brick pub more than its cozy, welcoming ambiance. After a year of reopening in Stoke Newington, The Jolly Butchers - a true ale and cider house - has made a name for itself as one of the top ten pubs in Britain. Beyond their impressive servings of beer, wine, ale and rum, this dining spot is also home to delicious grilled creations. On weekdays, the pub serves quick, equally satisfying - not to mention heavy - dishes including Angus beef burger, grilled ribeye and beef stroganoff. Weekends are a different story. The Jolly Butcher Sunday Roast - which usually includes rump of lamb, pork loin and nut roast - represents the grilled goodness London pubs are known for. Desserts such as apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding complete the selections. Friendly staff and waiters are ready to assist you.
