Bali's Beaches
Bali was once under the radar from the rest of the world back in the 1950s and was only a secret location among the locals and adventurous tourists. In only a few short years, Bali has made international recognition – mainly for its magnificent white sand beaches and surfing. Since then Bali's beaches have been developed into an important economic industry, yet the beaches themselves have remained pristine through the help of the locals and concerned travellers.
With that said, there is one thing that you should do in Bali and that is to put on your swimming attire and go to their beaches. In this list, we take a look at the many various beaches that Bali has to offer. Some of the beaches are commonly visited while some of them are quite hidden away from the public and might need an effort to get to. One thing is for sure, that the various beaches of Bali will be the highlight of your trip.
Melasti BeachOne of the most beautiful beaches, if not the best in Bali with pristine aquamarine waters that used to fly low on the radar is Melasti Beach.
In South Bali, nearer to Uluwatu this white sand beach used to be less inhabited but they constructed a road making it more accessible to locals and tourists alike. Presently, it has more tourists but it’s still comparatively less crowded than Bali’s other popular beaches. Read more...
Swimming is the chosen activity here since the waves are smaller for surfing than the other beaches. Driving down towards Melasti Beach is scenic in itself. The winding asphalt road above the huge limestone cliffs offers you an unparalleled vista of the rolling turquoise blue waters. This breathtaking view has often been used as a background shot for several photo shoots. If you can, stop for a moment and take picturesque shots of this beach spot surrounded by verdant greenery that instantly relaxes you. It’s called Melasti Beach because a Hindu Balinese ritual is commonly observed here. Melasti is a ceremony for purification performed a couple of days before Nyepi Day or Day of Silence in Bali. Getting to Melasti Beach, you can either rent a scooter or a four-wheeled drive vehicle with a driver. For a minimal entrance fee, you are guaranteed to enjoy one of the finest and crystal clear waters on Bali Island. tips

Seminyak Beach is a world apart from its adjacent beach resort regions – the likes of Kuta and Legian to its south – primarily due to the type of crowd it attracts. Bali first arose as a tourist destination for travelling surfers, attracted to these south-western shores by its dramatic waves, with Seminyak Beach itself offering its fine coast of gilded to dark sand and gorgeous sunsets. Seminyak Beach is chosen for its great waves that are ideal for surfing adventures hence many surfers visit this beach to overcome the waves and relish the surf adventure. Seminyak nowadays is also home to some of the attractive resorts and villas on the island, and they, in turn, are encircled by many luxury spas and dining outlets. Seminyak's Petitenget Beach offers a more private ambience. This is if you compare it with Kuta and Legian to its south. However, after sunset, a livelier nightlife scene takes over. Hotspots in Seminyak have all gathered an international following. These include chic hotels such as the W Retreat & Spa as well as premier beach clubs and entertainment sites such as Ku De Ta and Potato Head Beach. It is a great location to sit with a glass of wine or a cocktail and watch the sunset. tips

Beautiful beachfront settings overlooking clean white sand beaches make Nusa Dua a peaceful place for honeymooners. Some resorts feature great kids’ clubs, making Nusa Dua an ideal beach destination for families. Hike up the many stages to Mother Temple Besakih and combine sight-seeing with muscle toning. There are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas along the sand for parents to lounge while the kids play in the water. Balangan BeachSometimes, all you need to hear are the words ‘Great beach with white sand and beautiful scenery’. This surfing paradise attracts wave riders from around the world, who enjoy most of the south-western Bukit coastline together with Balangan's sister breaks of Dreamland, Impossibles, Padang Padang, Suluban and Uluwatu further south. Balangan Beach shares the same vicinity as Dreamland, set only a kilometre apart and separated by a small headland that serves as the famous signature Hole 15 of the New Kuta Golf Course, from where players get the best bird's eye-view over both beaches and the ocean horizon. It is swimmable here, but bear in mind it’s a predominantly a surfer’s playground. There are no lifeguards on duty. Several thatch-roofed and stilt terrace warungs and cafes make up the eastern side of the coastline, where surfers usually ‘refuel’ in between their thrills. Best time to come with a surfboard if you’re a pro is around the dry season when south-westerly winds create 2.5ft up to 10-feet swells which can roll on for a good 500 meters. The coastline is accessible down Jalan Pantai Balangan, an approximate 7-kilometre (4.3-mile) ride west from the Garuda Wisnu Kencana cultural park and 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) south from the main hub of Kuta. Preferably by taxi, or ask your hotel concierge for available shuttle services. Palm trees, white sand and local warungs offering cheap drinks and tasty food are all that awaits you in this simple piece of paradise. tips
Echo BeachEcho Beach is one of Bali's most recently christened surf spots. The nickname overshadows its local name ‘Pantai Batu Mejan', after a significant Balinese Hindu sea temple on site. Sharing the serene rice field-landscaped region of Canggu with other wave-riding haunts such as Berawa, Seseh and Pererenan, Echo Beach has become most popular due to its advanced reef breaks, 180-degree seascape and sunsets offer an array of delicious seafood cafes set on a high vantage point from where to enjoy it all.

Echo Beach was once a surfers’ secret, many travellers would share the secret beauty of the area through word of mouth. Soon enough came multiple visitors, turning it into a new prime spot for beach activities. The black-sand beach is a few kilometres northwest of Kuta and Seminyak and a 14km drive west from the provincial capital of Denpasar. For those staying in one of the many luxury villas in Canggu, such as The Bali Dream Villa Resort, Ametis Villa and the LV8 Resort, this seaside region can be reached by an hour-long transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban, South Bali. Past the classy area of Seminyak, the journey further west takes you to Canggu’s green expanse of rice paddies, which remain well-kept by the local Balinese villagers. Echo Beach is at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, the road originally named after the temple there, but which now has more signposts bearing its new nickname. It is a great spot to watch the sunset with an ice cold beer. The surf here is huge and definitely only for experienced surfers as beginners might find it difficult. While the coast is excellent for sunbathing, a relaxed stroll, surfing and landscape photography, the waves of Echo Beach are strictly for advanced riders. Surfers dominate the scene by day, before shifting to a more ambient dining scene by night. The beach is clean and well-kept, the result of the joint efforts among various surf schools and clubs along Canggu's coast, which carry out routine beach cleanups along its kilometre-length which happens daily. To conclude, Echo Beach serves as one of the island's best surf spots, and a great place to chill with an easygoing vibe, great views and delicious seafood. tips
