The temple has been etched in Balinese history. There was a time when Dang Hyang Nirartha, a high priest from the Majapahit Kingdom in East Java who travelled to Bali in 1489 to spread Hinduism, arrived at the beautiful area and established a site honouring the sea god, Baruna. Here, he shared his traditions with Beraban villagers, only to be faced with opposition from the village chief who momentarily gathered his loyal followers to oust Nirartha. The priest resisted, incredibly shifting a large rock he meditated upon out to sea while transforming his sashes into sea snakes to guard at its base. The rock’s original name, Tengah Lod, means ‘in the sea’. The onshore site is dotted with smaller shrines alongside visitors’ leisure facilities that comprise restaurants, shops and a cultural park presenting regular dance performances. There are fitting pathways and well-kept tropical gardens lining the grounds from Tanah Lot to Batu Bolong, with resting spots offering shades and good sunset viewpoints to both ridges. There are also art shops selling souvenirs and Balinese curios of all sorts lining the pathway from the parking area to the temple. Additionally, there are also peddlers selling traditional snacks such as Jaja kelepon – a delicious must-try palm sugar snack filled gelatinous balls rolled in grated coconut. A visit to Tanah Lot temple is an experience to behold. tips

Its namesake literally means ‘The source temple of Lake Beratan'. Because of its iconic look, you may have even seen this temple in films or pictures before. Many would say that this temple is the most popular sanctuary, rivalling that of its sister temples like the temples of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. The lake is probably the main charm, creating a unique flowing impression of the temple with its smooth reflective surface juxtaposed on the magnificent backdrop of the Bedugul mountain range. Perhaps now, you are already familiar with the island's unique religion. It was in the 17th century when the temple of Ulun Danu Beratan was created to honour the main Hindu trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The locals even dedicated the temple to the lake goddess, Dewi Danu. The unique and serene environment of this Balinese temple has cemented it as a popular sightseeing and recreational spot. You will find many photographers here, with the majestic temple and the beautiful landscape creating a magnificent backdrop for a timeless photo. The history behind the Ulun Danu Beratan is intertwined with Balinese history. It was during the rise of the Mengwi Kingdom, the regional sovereignty of this side of Indonesia that erected the temple. The so-called floating temple complex was constructed with four individual sections, which include the iconic Lingga Petak shrine to the temple's east side. The temple acts like a compass in which every four points has four gates that face its individual direction. There is also another group, which can be found on the west side, that pays homage to another temple. The temple in question is Puncak Mangu Temple, another magnificent Balinese temple that is known as the temple of soil fertility. Proceeding inside the complex, you are greeted with the shrines dedicated to the Hindu gods. Vishnu has 11 tiers, Brahma with 7 and Shiva with three. The temple is more than just a holy temple of the Mengwi kingdom, however, as it is also the location of two megalithic artefacts. An ancient sarcophagus and a Balinese stone tablet. One really has to wonder if this temple was once a consecrated site long before the Balinese Hindus created the temple. One thing is for sure, that this temple is a must visit if you love Balinese history. tips

The Rock Bar boasts a simple design with an open-top platform seamlessly built onto the natural formation. Ambient lighting from around the bar and the shades at sunset, together with traditional fishing boat lanterns that dot the seascape add to the theatrical appeal of the bar. What the bar offers is less about the looks of their facilities but more on the service. Getting to the Rock Bar itself is an experience that anyone should try. Past Ayana’s green cliff-top lawns you’ll notice dual ways to descend, and both provide remarkable bird’s eye views. First is the ‘hard way’ down the long flight of stairs that leads you to the Kisik Bar & Grill, which serves fine seafood under a thatched roof restaurant and at the tables on the beach. Ongoing to the Rock Bar, you will stroll along the cliff base causeway around Ayana’s free-form ocean beach pool. Hovering above the waves, the Rock Bar is a small centrepiece with the immense sky and the Indian Ocean as a backdrop. There are several round tables at the lower lobby and eight more steps up lead you to the main bar, which is bordered by glass screens. The Rock Bar's groundbreaking design was conceived by Yasuhiro Koichi of the Japanese design studio Spin. Wooden deck areas provide supplementary viewing points on both sides of the main rock that stretches along the coast, one of which is accessed via a natural cave. The cave walls sparkle with what seems to be crystal, quartz-like minerals – another cool feature that the Rock Bar has to offer among other things. tips
