Wat Arun
Also known as the Temple of Dawn, this temple is located in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok. This one-hundred-year-old temple has existed since the seventeenth century. Dedicated to the Sun God Aruna of Hinduism, this temple was constructed on top of a smaller temple by King Taksin.
The prominent Emerald Buddha was once placed on this temple, but was relocated across the river and into the Grand Palace around the year 1785. Ever since, the temple underwent major and minor restorations. Today, the temple stands to reflect the amazing beauty of the Khmer-style of architecture. The prang or its tall-carved spire is thoroughly decorated by seashells and porcelain, some of which were imported from China. Likewise, there are various figures of Chinese soldiers and animals around the prang. Visitors can climb up the central pang and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Chao Phraya River. Wat Arun, up to this day, is a functional temple of worship and monks live in the temple complex. This temple is a very popular tourist destination, and various restaurants and entertainment establishments can be found across the river. The temple is open both for tourists and locals from 8:30 to 17:30. TIPS
