Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier is a century-old pier featuring a Pacific Park amusement. This tourist spot is often seen in films and music videos. A lot of beachside activities are available such as fishing, surfing and paddleboarding. There are also plenty of bike rental shops available if you wish to go on a bike tour.

The prominent icon in Santa Monica Pier is its bright red and yellow solar-powered Ferris wheel. There’s also an arcade where you can enjoy playing over 200 games. Santa Monica Pier does not run out of entertaining spectacles as there are plenty of street performers, live music, a delicious array of food choices and a mesmerizing beachside sunset to occupy your time.

There’s also a nearby Santa Monica Pier Aquarium where you can check out interactive exhibits. Santa Monica Pier is free to walk around as well as their beach access. The rides and attractions in Pacific Park may cost you 5 -10usd but you are free to stroll along the Park’s grounds.

TIPS

Explore the Third Street promenade where only pedestrians are allowed. There are a lot of restaurants, interesting shops and entertaining performers in this area.
On weekends, you can participate in a historical walking tour to learn more fun facts about this popular landmark.
On Thursdays, during summer, they hold Twilight Concerts at the beach.
For photography enthusiasts, remember to take a picture of the Route 66 replica sign along the middle of the Pier. At the end of the Colorado Avenue, you can also take a shot of the vintage 1940 Santa Monica Yacht Harbor entrance sign.
The Pacific Park Amusement has free admission and you can walk around but if you intend to play some games or go on the rides, you pay $5-$10. There’s also an option to purchase an unlimited ride wristband. If you want to save more, you can also buy the tickets online.
There are free 1-hour walking tours on weekends at 11AM and noon. Reservation is not required unless you prefer a private or group tour. Keep an eye on the blue-shirted docents stationed by the Pier Shop in the Carousel building if you want to take a free tour.
Bring cash to tip your favorite buskers.
In early fall, there are film screenings at the southeast corner of the Pier.
Mind your belongings as it can get pretty crowded and avoid displaying too much cash in public. Keep an eye on your electronics as well.
Santa Monica Pier is a smoke-free zone.
Bring a light jacket or wind shirt as the fog can roll in unexpectedly and the ocean breezes can be particularly windy.
Check out the Trapeze School of New York teaching classes of all ages, it’s fun to watch.
Bring sunscreen as the sun may get intense midday.
